Twisty Crystal Font - (WIP)

nameplate

It began as a simple pair of shapes (trapezoids) with alternating fades. Very quickly it was apparent that the outline was too prominent, so I reduced it to 0.05px to make it unobtrusive. Completely eliminating the outline would make it fade out against a white background and be less crystal-like.

origin outline

In its current early-release state, it has capital letters, ten digits and a basic set of punctuation. It is very much a work-in-progress.

version 01

The font is built using Inkscape. The file is 433.4 KB, not too big, but the combined file is slow for editing any given character. The "method" I eventually worked out was to fit each letter "into" the Zero character. This example image shows the replacement digit 4 because early critique pointed out that the first version was a completely different design.

alternate 4

It turned out to be impractical for all characters to fit the outline of the zero. Note the extra width of the @ symbol and the W as examples of wider characters, the letter I is more narrow, and several of the punctuation marks are appropriately smaller. The asterisk posed a different challenge by not allowing easy crystal connections at the center, so it is built by just doing four overlapping crystal shapes.

This is NOT a font for use with your keyboard. Shaded fonts are not suited for that kind of thing. This is more of a clipart kind of thing. If you wish to use it, Use Inkscape to arrange the individual characters into the pattern you want...as done with the nameplate at the top of the page. Then export or do an approprate screen capture to paste where you need it.

The font is released CC0, the Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication license, intending to let it be freely used, modified, improved, reshared. While mentioning the author is appreciated, it is not required, at all.

Download and play: - I would love to see what you do with it, online or otherwise!

I am looking for feedback, including requests for currently missing characters. Use the email address in the footer to reach out, or connect with me on the fediverse @Algot@mastodon.art - Thanks.
